This remarkable museum-quality replica Cheyenne War Shirt was crafted in the 1990s and acquired through an auction supporting the Museum of Indigenous Peoples in Prescott, Arizona. Made from four full buckskins, the shirt has been smoked with cedar to give it both preservation and spiritual resonance. The garment is adorned with real human hair locks, symbolic of scalps taken in battle—an honorific mark among warrior societies.

Notable military references include U.S. Cavalry First Sergeant insignia and brass vest buttons, likely added to symbolize the defeat of an enemy or spiritual conquest. Brass buttons along the collar, often traded from military shoes, add another layer of authenticity.

The centerpiece features real bear teeth, turtle shell conchos, glass and brass beads from traditional trade, and deer ribs carved into beads. The feathers, known as “legal feathers,” are dyed and painted turkey feathers crafted to resemble eagle feathers.
